Ballsbridge College of Further Education has become part of the Green-Campus Progamme in an effort to become a sustainable and an environmental responsible college. The college had been part of the Green Schools programme since 2008 and moved over to the Green-Campus programme in September 2012. This programme is run by An Taisce and Green Schools. The college’s Green-Campus committee is made up of staff and students and its task is to plan and implement a number of environmental changes within the college on a yearly basis.
Examples of such changes include:
- creating awareness and encouraging learning around environmental issues
- encouraging a conscious effort from staff, students and teachers to reduce and recycle
The Green Charter was agreed originally in October 2008 once a litter and waste audit were complete. Initially, the code was mainly related to bins in the college however in the preceding years the college has progressed and focused on other areas such as photocopying, printing and composting. The Green Charter has integrated into school life very effectively: paper usage has been reduced, recycling has increased and both staff and students are more environmentally aware.
Additionally, a yearly action day organised by the committee gives them an opportunity to further integrate the charter into everyday life within the college. Students are educating each other and gaining knowledge on good recycling and environmental practices. Ballsbridge College grows greener by the day!
Congratulations to the students who will visit Amsterdam in February 2013 to complete a two week placement programme.
