Ten students from Ballsbridge College of Further Education travelled to Amsterdam in February 2010, to undertake a work placement as part of the Leonardo Da Vinci Mobility programme. The students (pictured above with the Project Co-ordinator in ROC Van Amsterdam) were selected from Event Management, Business, IT and EFL courses in Ballsbridge College.
The group spent two weeks working in event management companies, internet based companies and the ROC School of Management and Event Support. During that time students experienced working in a European country, giving them the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a work based environment. The programme also enabled them to further develop skills such as adapting to different environments, communication and working as part of a team.
“The Leonardo Da Vinci programme has given me fantastic hands-on experience in the industry I want to get into. I’ve been fortunate to have been given the opportunity to develop new skills and see new work practices,” said Thomas Deevy, one of the participants.
The project, funded by the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Programme and managed here in Ireland by Leargas, has enabled Ballsbridge College to develop a link with ROC Van Amsterdam, a vocational institution in Amsterdam offering similar courses to those offered by Ballsbridge College and the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee (CDVEC).
Ten students from ROC Van Amsterdam then travelled to Ballsbridge College in March 2010 and had a very productive visit.
It is hoped this link will further develop over the next number of years and Ballsbridge College plan to offer a similar programme for students in 2010-2011.
The Event Management Class of 2009-2010 successfully produced a fun-packed, exciting event on behalf of their client Young Social Innovators (YSI) on Wednesday 3rd March 2010. YSI is a social awareness programme for young people supporting social awareness through action and platforms for young people and those guiding them, which results in an enhancement of participants’ personal sense of justice, responsibility and capacity to relate to all. YSI fires young people’s passion to change the world for good.
The Event Management class produced a fun entertaining event at one of YSI 'Speak Out' fora which took place in Griffith College. Over 700 YSI participants from second level schools in Dublin attended the event.
The Event Management students event centred on a ‘Soap Box’ corner where YSI participants were given the opportunity to voice their opinion through words, actions and visual aids in a fun and interactive way. Each soap box participant was provided with a photo and other goodies as a memento of their participation in the event.
Planning and delivering an event is a core element of the Event Management course and working for a 'real organisation' client provided a realistic experience for the Event Management students:
"We really appreciated the opportunity to work alongside a professional organisation like YSI, particularly on such a large scale event as YSI’s Speak Out fora."
YSI was delighted to work with the Event Management students and were very impressed with creativity and hard work demonstrated by the students. The Event Management students gained enormously from the experience:
"Planning this event was very challenging. We learnt that working as a team was key to the success of the event. It was rewarding to see our hard work turned into reality. We were really proud that our event ideas were so appreciated by the YSI participants. Their enthusiasm added to the great atmosphere at the event and made it such a success."
The Event Management students of 2009-10 should be congratulated on a job well done. They will build on this experience as they begin their careers in the Event Management sector. Ballsbridge College wishes them every success for the future.
