Crime, criminal justice and the penal system are subjects of serious concern in Ireland at present. Students on this course study the causes of crime, the different types of crime, and the criminal justice system in Ireland. Criminal motivation and the underlying societal causes of crime are examined.

Professional state organisations and privately-owned companies are looking for potential candidates who can demonstrate an interest and a proven ability to work in social and community care and in criminology.

Upon successful completion of the year, your FETAC qualification will allow you to seek employment in the following areas:

Career Opportunities

Ireland today is showing an increasing appreciation of the need for civilians to play a greater role in the state bodies involved in law and order. In November 2006, two expert reports (from An Garda Síochána and An Garda Síochána Advisory Group) both strongly recommended

"the employment of civilians at all levels in the forces from senior management to clerical grades."

The increase in the civilianisation of these bodies is echoed by the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice who says

"these key organisations in the State deserve expert civilian support staff."

This course will allow this process of engagement by offering you the opportunity to develop key specialist legal, psychology, social studies and IT skills, as well as improving your personal and interpersonal skill set.

At the end of the year, students will be well placed to take up offers of employment within the community sector or with law and order agencies.

In addition to employment opportunities, graduates can also use their Level 5 FETAC qualification to advance to Higher Education. For further information visit the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC), the CAO and the websites of the particular Higher Education Institutions.

Graduates may progress into Year 1 of the Institute of Public Administration's (IPA) part-time, NUI-accredited, Diploma in Public Management or Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and can also avail of additional subject exemptions. Visit the Institute of Public Administration website or contact the IPA directly for more information.
